Access

Visitors are welcome at Chiiori year-round. If you’re planning to stay at Chiiori overnight, you must contact us, preferably a week in advance. No matter how long your visit, a call the morning before you arrive is much appreciated. Please see the Contact Us page for our contact details.

Here’s how to access Chiiori:

By Car

Traveling west on the Tokushima Expressway (徳島自動車道) from Tokushima, exit off the Ikawa-Ikeda Interchange (井川池田IC) to Rt 32. After driving through Awa-Ikeda (阿波池田) cross the Yoshino River and head south on Rt 32.

About 25 km south of Awa-Ikeda, turn left on Rt 45 across the river and past JR Oboke Station (JR大歩危駅) and Boke Mart. Don’t forget to stop here for supplies if you are planning on traveling around Iya before you arrive at Chiiori. It’s the last well-stocked market in the area.

After driving on Rt 45 for about 10 km you’ll cross the Iya River. Here the road veers right and passes an Eneos service station. This is the last chance for petrol, so fill up.

A few kilometers past the Eneos station you’ll see the Kazurabashi Hotel (かずら橋ホテル) on your left. Just after the hotel, take a sharp left on Rt 32 towards Mt Tsurugi (剣山).

Drive 5 km to Oshima Tunnel (小島トンネル). After the tunnel, cross a bridge and look for the sign to Chiiori on your right. Turn up the mountain road and drive 4.5 km. Chiiori parking is on your right down a steep drive. Take care when turning in. Please call ahead if you are coming by car as parking is limited.

By Train

When accessing Chiiori by train, visitors usually take either the Tsurugisan Express (剣山) from Tokushima (徳島) to Awa-Ikeda Station, or the Nampu Express (南風) from Okayama (岡山) to Awa-Ikeda or Oboke Stations.

From the JR Oboke Station it’s easy to take a taxi to Chiiori. There are usually cabs waiting in front of the station from 8am to 8pm. Just hop in and say ‘Chiiori onegaishimasu’. The cab ride from Oboke Station takes about 45 minutes and will cost around Y5,500, but it will get you directly to Chiiori. Travelers at JR Awa-Ikeda and Oboke Stations can also take the bus.

By Bus

Buses run from Osaka and Kobe to Awa-Ikeda Bus Terminal (阿波池田BT) 6 times a day. Please consult the following timetable for details:

Buses leaving from Awa-Ikeda Bus Terminal, JR Awa-Ikeda Station and JR Oboke Station for Kubo (久保) can stop at Oshima Tunnel (小島トンネル), but this is not a regular stop so please ask the driver to stop at Oshima Tunnel when you board the bus or the bus may pass it. The bus ride takes an 1 hour 15 minutes and costs about Y1,350/person.

From Oshima Tunnel Bus Stop, it is a 5km hike back across the bridge and up the mountain road to Chiiori. A pick up may be possible, but you must request one by phone or email before the day of your arrival.
