2011年末、篪庵はその歴史が始まって以来の大きな改修工事に入りました。もはや篪庵は、緊急な修理が必要なほど状態が悪化していました。
改修では屋根の葺替えのみならず、構造の補強が大きなテーマとなりました。柱の傾きの矯正、土台の補強、耐震強化、電気配線の改善などの工事が必要になります。
さらに、キッチン、トイレ、風呂の水まわりを改善し、納屋にはショップとオフィススペースを設置する等、現代的な機能も加えます。この篪庵が構造的に丈夫で、かつ快適な空間に生まれ変われば、日本の民家改修や保全に役立つ一つのモデルとなるでしょう。

今回の大掛かりな改修工事は、2011年11月から始まり、2012年7月に無事完了しました。

我々の活動は、篪庵という一軒の家を改修することが最終目的ではありません。 東祖谷の古民家活用、徳島の「にし阿波観光圏」の観光促進に力を入れ、長崎、岡山、奈良、石川県などではコンサル事業などを進めています。

三好市東祖谷歴史観光まちづくり事業

東祖谷は三好市との合併以降、観光業に力を注いでいます。篪庵トラストも三好市の依頼を受け、祖谷の奥地、落合集落にある8軒の民家改修のプロジェクトを進めています。改修された民家を観光客が宿泊できる施設として管理、運営します。それは観光のためだけではなく、林業と農業の復活・促進（例えば茅文化の復活）を促すことにもなります。

他の地域への広がり

近年、私たちは地方にある古い民家を再生し、宿泊施設やレストランとして活用するプロジェクトに携わっています。長崎県の離島小値賀（おぢか）などがその例です。日本各地に深刻な問題を抱えている地域があります。そこでは、地域資源を生かして観光客を招き入れることが活性化につながります。また、石川県の加賀橋立では、江戸時代に建てられた屋敷を篪庵トラストが委託を受け管理する事業も予定しています。（http://alex-kerr.com/jp/)


ほんの４、５年前までは、こうした取組みは日本では不可能であると思われていました。しかし時代は変わり、私たちが夢と思っていたことが現実になろうとしています。今後は篪庵トラストの活動範囲を広げ、日本各地で田舎の再生に取り組んでいきたいと望んでいます。

The restoration of Chiiori involves not only rethatching, but structural work including straightening the leaning beams and repairing the foundations, as well as adding new electrical and water systems, kitchen, toilets, rebuilding the storage shed as Shop and Office, etc.
Chiiori’s roof and structure have deteriorated to the point that repair is truly critical. If Chiiori is to serve as a model of house restoration across Japan ? then it needs to be made secure and comfortable.
The work starts in November 2011, and was successfully completed in July 2012.

The Miyoshi Project

Miyoshi (of which Iya is a part), has asked Chiiori Trust to oversee the repair of eight houses further up the valley in Iya. When completed, we’ll manage them as places for visitors to stay. In the process, we hope to stimulate not only tourism, but also forestry and farming (including growing thatch) as well.

Even four or five years ago, this sort of activity was nearly impossible in Japan. Suddenly the times have changed, so we find ourselves on the cusp of something we only dreamed of before: changing not only Iya, but Japan itself.

Beyond Iya

In the last few years, I’ve been working on projects to restore old houses as inns and restaurants in remote but beautiful places such as Ojika island (Nagasaki Pref). Recently, the owner of an Edo-period mansion in Ishikawa Prefecture has offered to consign it to Chiiori Trust for management. For details on these regional projects, see: http://alex-kerr.com/jp/


This kind of activity is what I dreamed of for Japan for many years but it seemed impossible. Now, in the last four or five years, the mood has changed. The projects in Ojika and Hashidate, are just the beginning of what Chiiori Trust hopes to do.
